Toronto GAA
Champions Crowned
Tuesday, 31 August 2010

The Toronto GAA 2010 season wrapped up on Sunday with 3 quality games of football.

To start the day, St. Pats played Brampton in the junior Shield Final. After a very exciting first half, St. Pats charged out determined to shut down Brampton for the remainder of the game. Brampton battled hard, but could not stop Pats in the end, losing a close one 2-07 to 1-09.

In the ladies final, St. Mikes looked to win their second consecutive championship. The first half was very even, with Ottawa fighting hard to hold of the Mikes attack. However, in the second half, the reigning champions pulled away from the Gaels, eventually taking the Championship with a score of 4-13 to 2-04.

Finally, in the senior mens game, Durham took on St. Mikes. Mikes had won both meetings between the clubs during the league, but Durham came out strong and took a lead into the second half, 0-04 to 0-03. However, St. Mikes battled hard in the second half, quickly taking the lead and not looking back to win 0-12 to 0-06.

Congratulations to St. Pats and St. Mikes' men and women on their wins this weekend. Also congratulations to all those players and clubs involved in this season on a great year. The Toronto GAA would like to thank all those who attended any of the games this year, and all those who helped to make this season possible.

The Powerscreen Sevens will be held next weekend on Saturday. More details will follow.

Championship Finals Set
Tuesday, 24 August 2010

The second week of the Toronto GAA Championship provided entertaining and high quality football in all divisions, and has also given us what we've all been waiting for. The answers to who will play for the Senior, Junior, and Ladies Championship titles next Sunday at Centennial Park.

In the Junior divison, the St. Mikes B team took on St. Pats in the first semi-final. A big effort by Pats in the first half had them up by as much as 7 points, but St. Mikes battled back in the second half and went up late in the game. However, Pats battled back to bring the score level and force extra time. In that extra time, St. Pats took control and cemented their place in the Shield final next weekend, winning 1-16 to 2-09.  In the other semi-final, Brampton took on the Toronto Gaels. In a hard fought game, Brampton eventually came out on top, and will face St. Pats next weekend in the final.

In the ladies division, there was only one semi-final as Ottawa had a bye to the final. A week ago, Michael Cusacks beat St. Mikes, but it was a whole different story on Sunday. Mikes charged out in the first half and took a 0-09 to 0-0 score to halftime. They never looked back, winning 0-13 to 0-02 and will play the Ottawa Gaels next weekend for the Championship.

Finally, in the Senior mens, Durham took on St. Vincents. A hard hitting, rough affair, Durham pulled out the upset, beating Vincents by 3 points, 1-10 to 1-07. Shortly thereafter, St. Mikes took to the field against the travelling Ottawa Gaels. With a quick goal on a penalty, St. Mikes took the lead and never let up, beating Ottawa 4-13 to 0-08 and sending themselves to the final against Durham next weekend.

Next weeks matchups:

Brampton vs St. Pats

St. Mikes vs Ottawa (women)

St. Mikes vs Durham (men)

Hope to see you all out at the Park to finish off what has been a very successful 2010 season for the Toronto GAA! Check the 'Championship Draw' link for the schedule.
